Family Fun For Unexpected Situations
Friday, August 1st, 2008What do you do when the power goes out? Do you sit around staring at a candle, just waiting for someone to come fix the problem and give you your power back? That might be okay if something goes off for just a few minutes or a half an hour, but when something happens, it could take hours for things to pick up. Instead of being bored, there are some fun things your family can do that will speed up the time and make things light and easy. This is important at night when no power may mean a group of very scared and extremely bored children. There are other times when some family fun entertainment may be necessary as well.
When the power goes out, there are some family fun things you can do with the kids. First, try to remain calm so they think there is nothing they should worry about. Find sources of light that you can use, mostly candles and flashlights. You can tell spooky stories in the dark, but that would not be recommended for kids under the age of 12 or 13, unless you want them to never sleep again. Think about things like shadow puppets using the existing light, or even word games. Some would include starting a story and having the next person add a line. These are fun, and are even a bit sneaky because they can have educational value as well.
When you find that you are stranded in your car because of a breakdown or flat tire that you can not fix, you may have to wait a while for help to arrive. Be sure you are in a safe position, and then think of family fun ideas that you can do while you want. You may want to take turns guessing about the color of the next car to pass, or you may want to play family fun games like I Spy or anything else you can think of or make up. Don’t just sit there waiting or your kids are going to get themselves into trouble. If you have kids, you know they can do this just about anywhere.
Family fun in the midst of unusual circumstances not only keeps children occupied, it also gives them a sense of calm. They may think that everything is going to be okay because you are calm, and the family is laughing together. You may be worried about what is going to happen, but they should not have to think about that unless absolutely necessary. This also give them a sense that no matter what happens, a family can always get through things together.
